Celebrating the Wonderful Career of our WA Coordinator – Prof Em Lyn Abbott

November 12, 2024

The Crawford Fund is proud to have an opportunity to acknowledge the extraordinary career of our WA Committee Coordinator, Emerita Professor Lynette Abbott, an internationally recognised leader in soil science and soil biology. 2024 marks 50 years of research and service by Lyn at the University of WA (UWA).

The UWA’s School of Agriculture and Environment and Institute of Agriculture (IOA) are hosting a symposium to celebrate Lyn’s career. Titled ‘Grounded in Soil Science: Celebrating UWA Emerita Professor Lynette Abbott’s Golden Jubilee of Service & Research,’ the event will be held at the University of Western Australia’s Wilsmore Lecture Theatre on 18 November 2024 from 1.30pm to 5pm. The public event will feature dedicated guest talks focused on the many chapters of Lyn’s incredible research career at UWA, including another WA Committee member, Professor Kadambot Siddique, who will address Lyn’s Impact on UWA Farm Ridgefield research and IOA activities.

Following other talks, including by UWA Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor Professor Tim Colmer; Head of the UWA School of Agriculture and Environment Associate Professor Matthias Leopold and Principal Research Scientist at CSIRO Adelaide Dr Mark Farrell, Lyn will deliver her own address on “From the Galapagos to soil science at UWA”.

We are so lucky to have dedicated coordinators like Lyn who is so passionate about research, women in science and supporting the next generation – according to UWA she has mentored over 30 PhD students, published 170+ papers, (H-index of 57 – Scopus) and  received prestigious honours, including fellowships from the Australian Institute of Agricultural Science and Soil Science Australia and the inaugural General Jeffery Soil Health Award.

Those outside Perth will find a recording of the celebrations on the IOA YouTube channel.
