Malcolm Thompson joined the Department in July 2017 and is responsible for the Water, ABARES, Exports, and Trade and Market Access divisions.
Malcolm was previously at the Department of the Environment and Energy where he oversaw work on environment spending, environmental regulation, and managed the National Reserves System, Australia’s Antarctic program, and corporate and strategic functions.
Malcolm has 30 years experience in the Australian Government. He studied economics at the University of Queensland before beginning his career in the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet. He has also worked in the Treasury, the Assistant Treasurer’s office and the Department of Transport and Regional Services.
From 2003 to 2007 Malcolm concentrated on water policy, helping to develop the National Water Initiative and to establish the National Water Commission.
