Proudly announcing the 2022 Derek Tribe Award recipient – Dr Lisa-Maria Rebelo

We have the great pleasure of announcing the Derek Tribe Award recipient for 2022 is Dr Lisa-Maria Rebelo, Lead Scientist at Digital Earth Africa and Principal Researcher, Earth Observation for Sustainable Development at the International Water Management Institute in Sri Lanka.

Lisa-Maria received the award in recognition of her work across the African continent, and in South and Southeast Asia, in water productivity, remote sensing, natural resource management, wetland monitoring and assessment, basin water accounting and water productivity.

The Crawford Fund’s Derek Tribe Award recognises the distinguished contributions of a citizen of a developing country to the application of research in agriculture or natural resource management in a developing country or countries. These people are often unsung heroes in their fields, with long and dedicated service that has incredible impact.

The Award was inaugurated in 2001 to mark the outstanding contributions of Emeritus Professor Derek Tribe AO OBE FTSE, Foundation Director of the Crawford Fund, to the promotion of international agricultural research.

The Crawford Fund is pleased to partner with Geosciences Australia to support Lisa-Maria’s visit to Australia to be presented with her award and to deliver the 2022 Derek Tribe Address at a free co-hosted event in Canberra and online on 9 November 2022 (details and registration link below).

“Lisa-Maria’s research has had significant impact. Her extensive experience and work across Africa and Asia as a remote sensing specialist with a focus on the provision of spatial information for improved land and water management, and the integration of research outputs into policy processes has improved understanding of the influence of various agricultural water management practices on wetlands and other agro-ecosystems. It has resulted in the development of new innovative remote sensing-based methodologies and identified options for improved management of water resources at multiple scales,” said water specialist Dr Colin Chartres, the Crawford Fund CEO.

“The Crawford Fund congratulates Dr Rebelo on this impact and on her career achievements. We look forward to her Derek Tribe address, particularly given our long-held focus on raising awareness of the benefits to Australia and developing countries of agricultural research for food and nutrition security,” concluded Dr Chartres.
