If you have ever considered a career in International Agriculture Development, a fantastic opportunity awaits!
The Crawford Fund International Agriculture Student Awards are now open.
We are seeking applications from university students undertaking degrees in agriculture, animal production, fisheries, forestry, natural resource management or any area related to food and nutrition security.
Our student awards will help you bring an international component to your studies and research and enable you to gain valuable practical experience working online with colleagues in a developing country, or when travel permits, an actual practical, feet-on-the-ground, opportunity in a developing country.
We proudly support the NextGen with each of our State and Territory Committees, except Victoria this year, providing student award opportunities to university students in their region.
The conditions and requirements for the State and Territory Committees’ awards differ in terms of eligibility, the maximum award amount, and the number of awards provided. We encourage you to make contact with the coordinator in the State/Territory in which your institution is based with any queries, as per the contact details below.
We strongly recommend you read the general background information before you start your application. The short online application form will require you to attach:
- a brief CV
- a budget outline
- the signatures of, or a supporting note from, the Authorised Officers approving your application
- details of at least one referee.
Your health and safety are paramount to us so you will be asked to provide details of relevant arrangements for this purpose too.
PLEASE NOTE THAT APPROVED AWARDEES’ TRAVEL WILL NEED TO COMPLY WITH DFAT TRAVEL ADVICE FOR SAFETY AND HEALTH PURPOSES.

In 2019, our State Committees supported 22 tertiary student awards. You can read about most of their experiences here. Our 12 awardees from 2020 are yet to complete their experiences after our unsettled COVID-19 year.
“I have taken away more than simply the physical experience of working in remote regions of a developing country but have been strongly influenced by the kindness and generosity of people who struggle daily to simply feed their family. It truly was an eye-opening experience,” said Peter Whitehouse from the University of Melbourne, reflecting on his experience in Myanmar in 2019.
These Awards are just one eye-opening and career-changing experience we offer young researchers with an interest in agriculture for development. We also deliver next generation opportunities including our conference scholar program, information about, and encouragement into, volunteering for projects overseas, and through our work with Researchers in Agriculture for International Development (RAID).
